How to Sell Your Car on Bring a Trailer

Start with an accurate account of the car. A useful auction listing makes its condition, history, and details easy for a buyer to understand.

Build the file first.

Gather ownership documents, service invoices, restoration records, mileage history, and a list of modifications. Separate what is documented from what is reported or unknown. Make a note of recent work, outstanding issues, and the parts or accessories included with the car.

Digitized records are easier to organize and share. Keep an unedited set for your own files, and prepare copies for the listing that protect personal information without hiding relevant vehicle history.

Make the submission specific.

Bring a Trailer reviews vehicle submissions and decides which to accept. Provide a clear description and representative photos. Acceptance, reserve approval, and scheduling are the platform’s decisions; using a listing service does not guarantee acceptance.

We review the car and discuss its market position before preparing a submission. That conversation should establish what you want to achieve, any preparation needed, and whether auction is the right format.

Show the whole car.

A strong photo set includes overall views, the interior, engine bay, wheels, identification markings, records, and visible wear. Detail shots should support the description. Include faults as clearly as the features you want buyers to notice.

Preparation helps the photos explain the car. For our managed consignments, we digitize documentation, detail the vehicle inside and out, and photograph it professionally. Owners handling their own listings can also book our standalone media service.

Set expectations before it goes live.

Discuss reserve and no-reserve options, comparable results, platform fees, and the time you can give the sale. Agree on your representation fees and any optional work separately. An asking price, a reserve, and an eventual sale result are different things.

Bring a Trailer typically runs seven-day auctions. Preparation and scheduling take additional time. Confirm the current platform terms and your listing’s schedule before making plans around a completion date.

Be available during the auction.

Buyers may ask for another photo, a detail from the records, or a viewing. Clear answers are more useful than sales language. If you need to check something, say so and follow up.

With our auction management service, we monitor the listing, post comments and updates, handle emails and calls, and coordinate private showings. The owner remains part of the decisions.

Plan for the handover.

A completed auction still needs payment, paperwork, and collection arrangements. Confirm how funds and documents will be handled, including whether an eligible checkout service is being used. Coordinate the release of the vehicle with the agreed transaction process.

We assist with paperwork and payment coordination and help arrange pickup or transport. If a car does not sell, the next step depends on the platform and the consignment terms; a sale should never be assumed.
